How do I dispose of an old or non-working appliance?
Small appliances such as a toaster or blender can be placed in your recycle cart. For larger appliances see the following options:

How do I dispose of yard waste, bulky household items, large amounts of household trash, construction debris, or hazardous waste items?
All yard debris or household trash may be taken to the Waste Management Metro Landfill at 12200 W. South County Line Road. This site is open to Franklin residents, with identification, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (CLOSED Tuesdays and Thursdays). To dispose of large amounts of carpet, large furniture, computers, and refuse not considered "regular household garbage", call Johns Disposal Service at 1-888-473-4701 or 262-473-4700 to arrange a special pickup and for pricing (prepay by credit card only).
Environmentally harmful substances and dangerous chemicals may be disposed of at Veolia Environmental Services. Visit MMSD's Hazardous Waste website for site locations and hours or call 414-225-2066.
How do I dispose of propane or helium tanks and fire extinguishers?
Johns Disposal Service will accept propane/helium tanks and fire extinguishers that are properly prepared - being fully drained/empty, the valve stem removed, and a hole drilled/punched in the container to ensure all the air is out. HOWEVER, no compressed gas cylinder or container can be taken via the green cart - these will only be accepted as a bulk item as these cannot go in a compaction truck due to the high risk in transporting them.

How do I dispose of sharps (needles, syringes, lancets)?
Needles, syringes, and lancets used at home must be stored in appropriate containers and taken to a collection site for disposal. (Knives, razors, and other sharp objects can be placed in the trash for pickup after being wrapped to prevent injury.) The City of Franklin Health Department is a sharps collection site for Franklin residents. Containers for collecting sharps are also available at the Franklin Health Department. Collection times are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For further information, call 414-425-9101.

You may dispose of recycling (no trash accepted) at the City of Franklin Recycling Center, 7979 W. Ryan Road. This site is open to Franklin residents only (proof of residency is required) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (excluding holidays). PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE DPW BUILDING EXPANSION, THE RESIDENTIAL BRUSH DROP-OFF/RECYCLING CENTER YARD IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. This includes the gated area for brush drop-off, recycling drop-off, and used motor oil, antifreeze, and oil filters. Is compost available for Franklin residents?
No, compost is not available; however, wood chips are available and located in a bin just outside of the Franklin Recycling Center gate at 7979 W. Ryan Road. You may help yourself to these at any time. Be sure to bring along a shovel or pitch fork and a container, as the chips are self serve.
What household batteries can be recycled and where can they be taken?
