FAQs About Outdoor Burning
Note: The following applies only to owner occupied single-family homes. If you reside in an apartment or condominium, check with your landlord and/or homeowners association.
Q: Can I have a recreational fire in my yard?
A: Yes. Recreational fires are allowed without a permit, with the following restrictions:

The fire must be contained in an approved manner; such as a commercial portable fireplace or a stone, metal, or masonry fire ring.

The fire should be a minimum of 25 feet from any combustible overhang or structure (portable fire places should NEVER be placed on wood decks).

Only dry firewood should be used.

Q: Can I burn yard waste?
A: Yes, with limitations. Open burning is allowed in the spring and fall, with a permit, and with the following restrictions:

Burning of yard waste is only allowed between the dates of April 1st and June 15th and between October 15th and November 30th.

Only dry, combustible leaves and branches may be burned. Burning of construction debris and other trash is prohibited.

The burn pile may not exceed 4 feet in width or 3 feet in height, must be a minimum of 50 feet from any building and 25 feet from any road.

Burning is permitted from 7:00 a.m. until 1/2 hour after sunset, and must be continuously supervised by a competent individual, age 16 or older.

A means of extinguishment (i.e., a garden hose or water bucket) must be immediately available at all times.

Wind speed may not exceed 9 miles per hour.
