The Bicycle Patrol Unit takes a proactive approach to policing in both urban and rural areas during daytime and nighttime hours. The Unit maintains high visibility by day, with an emphasis on crime prevention in our neighborhoods and retail areas and positive citizen contacts. The Oak Leaf Trail and the numerous parks in the City are patrolled as well. At night, the bicycle officer has the capability of running quietly, detecting crimes in progress, including thefts in subdivisions and underage drinking, as well as illegal use of drugs in fields and wooded areas, among others. The Bicycle Patrol Unit is capable of accessing areas where typical patrol cars cannot, helping to keep all areas of the City of Franklin safe.
The officers on the Bicycle Unit patrol the City’s streets, trails, and parks as part of their regular assigned duties and during special events, including the Independence Day Civic Celebration festivities and St. Martin’s Fair. Bike Unit members from the Police Department also assist with the annual Bike Rodeo event.
